Lippo Huhtala knows how to best utilize data and how to format it in a way that is most beneficial for end-users.

Huhtala has been working with computers for a long time, since 1978 to be exact. He has seen programming languages come and go, become a teacher at the school he used to study in, and worked in various startup companies before moving on to work with banking software. However, data processing has remained the same over the decades – and that is Huhtala’s special expertise.

As a data architect working at Samlink, Huhtala mainly works with data repositories in his job. Data modeling, processing, and related processes are also part of his job description.

– My work requires curiosity and a desire to understand what data is and how it can be utilized in the best possible way. It also requires a broad knowledge of practices, environments, and the nature of data, as well as organizational skills. Getting data to flow between data repositories is relatively straightforward but making it understandable to end-users requires a deeper understanding of the life of data, says Huhtala.

An architect needs to see the whole environment instead of just one path

The life cycle of data and understanding it are an essential part of the architect’s work.

Although one might imagine the work to be mostly about drawing pictures, recently even the architects in Huhtala’s team have gotten their hands dirty. When you get to do practical work, you get to see the whole life cycle of data from beginning to end. In fast-paced work, situations change quickly, and projects can be challenging.

A good team is an important part of the data repository process. Huhtala’s team receives the architect’s greatest praise.

– All the credit for our successes goes to the great team that always manages to get things done according to the framework set by the architect. Together we have overcome several challenging situations and clarified requirements. In addition, we have been able to share knowledge about data storaging with other teams, allowing the importance of data and knowledge of its requirements to be passed on. This way they can be better taken into account in the planning of new projects.

Data processing methods will remain the same in the future

The future prospects in the banking sector and in the IT world, in general, are interesting and constantly changing.

Platforms and environments change, and human work evolves and is partially automated, but there will always be a need for data processing and storage.

Although the surrounding technology is evolving, data processing methods remain the same. Huhtala explains that his work will follow essentially the same formula from now into the future:

– Information comes in, necessary actions are taken, and it continues its journey somewhere. That’s what it is in all its simplicity.
