Mika Niemi: Growth Is Driven by Curiosity and the Desire to Understand the Bigger Picture

Mika Niemi has always been interested not only in his own role, but in how systems, people, and processes connect with one another. This curiosity has guided his career from software development through project management to his current role as Deployment Manager, where he is responsible for the successful implementation of banking systems.

When Mika talks about his work, curiosity is a theme that comes up again and again. He wants to understand how things function on a broader scale, not just at his own desk. The same curiosity has shaped his career choices, his roles, and ultimately the way his current position at Samlink has evolved.

Today, Mika works as a Deployment Manager, responsible for planning and executing banking system deployments. The role requires precision, foresight, and the ability to consider technical, operational, and human perspectives at the same time.

Growth as a Series of Meaningful Steps

Mika’s career path has not followed a predetermined route. He has worked in the financial sector as a software developer and project manager, and at one point also in ICT development roles within the energy industry, before returning to finance.

“I’ve always been interested in the bigger picture. When I learn one area, I start wondering what happens next in the process and why,” he explains.

For him, moving from technical roles to coordination and management positions has never meant stepping away from technology. Instead, it has been a way to understand it more deeply.

“When you understand how developers think and what kind of constraints the business operates under, you can act as a translator between those worlds. That also helps in decision-making.”

Mika originally joined Samlink as a project manager, a role he sees as especially formative in understanding how large-scale banking systems function in practice.

“As a project manager, you really see how interconnected everything is. A small change can affect many areas, and understanding this has been extremely educational.”

Responsibility as the Greatest Teacher

In his current role, Mika is responsible for major system deployments, those moments when months or even years of work come together.

“Deployments are situations where there’s no room for guessing. Everything has to be carefully planned, tested, and verified in advance.”

He sees these moments as the most powerful learning experiences.

“When the responsibility is high, learning happens fast. Every deployment teaches you something new about technology, processes, and people.”

Mika feels that Samlink actively encourages professional growth and role development.

“There is strong trust here in people’s ability to grow into new roles. When you show interest and willingness to learn, you get support.”

A Growth Mindset Is Continuous Curiosity

For Mika, having a growth mindset does not mean constant pressure to advance quickly. Instead, it means openness.

“It’s about recognizing the limits of your own knowledge and choosing to work with people who are true experts in their fields.”

Rapid technological development makes continuous learning essential, but Mika also finds it motivating. Growth does not happen only through training programs, but primarily through hands-on experience.

“I’m especially interested in how automation and improved system interoperability can support deployment management. That’s an area where I believe we can make significant progress.”

His motivation often comes from seeing the direct impact of his work on customers.

“When systems work reliably, customers can trust that their everyday banking services function smoothly. That makes the work meaningful.”

If Mika should give one piece of advice to someone developing their career in technology, it would be about courage and curiosity beyond formal job descriptions.

“Opportunities are not always neatly packaged. Often, you have to notice them yourself and take the leap, even if it feels a little uncomfortable. It also helps to stay curious about what’s happening around you. Understanding often grows in areas that aren’t officially part of your responsibilities.”

Finding Balance Outside of Work

Professionally, Mika operates in a world of processes and planning. In his free time, he finds balance through physical activity and family life.

“We have two children, and everyday life revolves mostly around family. When I have time for myself, I usually spend it exercising,” he says.

His main hobby at the moment is CrossFit, and he has previously also enjoyed long cycling trips.

“Exercise helps me disconnect from work and reset mentally. It’s an important way to recover and stay energized.”
